Yes. Functional Skills English Level 2 can be taken through an online route. Reading and Writing are online computer-based exams, while Speaking & Listening is usually arranged separately as a remote assessment, often through a video call format.

The online route is useful if you want flexibility and prefer to complete the exams from a suitable private location. You will need a suitable laptop or computer, webcam, microphone, stable internet connection, valid photo ID and a quiet room. The three components are Reading, Writing, and Speaking & Listening. Reading checks your ability to understand written texts, identify key information, recognise purpose and interpret meaning. Writing checks your ability to produce clear, accurate and well-structured written communication.

Speaking & Listening checks how well you communicate in discussion and presentation-style tasks. You may need to share ideas, respond to questions, listen to others and explain your opinions clearly. To achieve the full English Level 2 qualification, you normally need to pass all three components.

The Reading exam normally lasts 1 hour. The Writing exam normally lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes. Speaking & Listening is assessed separately and usually includes a group discussion and presentation-style task.

If you are taking the online route, Reading and Writing are completed as online computer-based exams. If you choose the centre-based route, Reading and Writing are completed in a supervised exam setting, while Speaking & Listening is still usually arranged separately.

You do not always need to take a course before booking. If you already feel confident with reading comprehension, writing structure, spelling, punctuation, grammar and speaking tasks, you may choose to book the exam directly.

A course can be helpful if you have been away from education for a while, feel nervous about exams or are not sure whether your English is at Level 2. Results usually come within a week, but they may take up to 20 working days depending on marking and processing times. In exceptional cases, marking can take longer, so you should book early if you need the qualification for a deadline.

After passing, certificate processing may take additional time. If you need English Level 2 for university, college, an apprenticeship, employment, promotion or professional registration, do not leave your exam until the last minute. Leave enough time for marking, certificate processing and a possible retake if needed.

If you fail one component, you normally only need to retake the component you did not pass. For example, if you pass Reading and Speaking & Listening but fail Writing, you would usually only need to retake Writing.

This is why it is useful to understand the three components separately. Some learners are strong in Reading but need more practice with Writing, while others need more confidence with Speaking & Listening. Good preparation can reduce the chance of needing a retake.
