Functional Skills English Level 2 FAQs
Clear answers about Functional Skills English Level 2 exams, online and centre-based options, Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, prices, results, course preparation and GCSE equivalency.
What is the Functional Skills English Level 2 exam?
Functional Skills English Level 2 is a practical English qualification for learners who need to show they can read, write, speak and listen effectively in real-life, work and study situations. It is commonly used for employment, apprenticeships, college courses, university entry routes, teaching assistant roles, healthcare courses and career progression.
To achieve the full qualification, you normally need to pass three components: Reading, Writing, and Speaking & Listening. Each component checks a different English skill, so it is important to prepare for all three before booking your exam.
Is Functional Skills English Level 2 equivalent to GCSE English?
Functional Skills English Level 2 is widely accepted as a GCSE English Grade 4/C equivalent route by many employers, colleges, apprenticeship providers and universities. It is a popular option for adults who need a recognised English Level 2 qualification without retaking GCSE English.
Requirements can vary depending on the organisation. Before booking, always check directly with the employer, college, university or training provider asking for the qualification. This is especially important for nursing, teacher training, social work, policing, apprenticeships and university entry routes.
Can I take Functional Skills English Level 2 online?
Yes. Functional Skills English Level 2 can be taken through an online route. Reading and Writing are online computer-based exams, while Speaking & Listening is usually arranged separately as a remote assessment, often through a video call format.
The online route is useful if you want flexibility and prefer to complete the exams from a suitable private location. You will need a suitable laptop or computer, webcam, microphone, stable internet connection, valid photo ID and a quiet room. You can check the online English Level 2 exam option when you are ready to book.
What are the three Functional Skills English Level 2 components?
The three components are Reading, Writing, and Speaking & Listening. Reading checks your ability to understand written texts, identify key information, recognise purpose and interpret meaning. Writing checks your ability to produce clear, accurate and well-structured written communication.
Speaking & Listening checks how well you communicate in discussion and presentation-style tasks. You may need to share ideas, respond to questions, listen to others and explain your opinions clearly. To achieve the full English Level 2 qualification, you normally need to pass all three components.
How much does Functional Skills English Level 2 cost?
Each English Level 2 component is listed from £90. This means Reading is £90, Writing is £90, and Speaking & Listening is £90. If you need the full English Level 2 qualification, the full bundle is listed from £270.
If you fail or miss one component and need to retake it, the retake price is normally charged per component. If you are not confident yet, you can prepare first with an English online course before taking the exam.
How long are the Functional Skills English Level 2 exams?
The Reading exam normally lasts 1 hour. The Writing exam normally lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes. Speaking & Listening is assessed separately and usually includes a group discussion and presentation-style task.
If you are taking the online route, Reading and Writing are completed as online computer-based exams. If you choose the centre-based route, Reading and Writing are completed in a supervised exam setting, while Speaking & Listening is still usually arranged separately.
Do I need to take a course before booking the English Level 2 exam?
You do not always need to take a course before booking. If you already feel confident with reading comprehension, writing structure, spelling, punctuation, grammar and speaking tasks, you may choose to book the exam directly.
A course can be helpful if you have been away from education for a while, feel nervous about exams or are not sure whether your English is at Level 2. Course preparation can help you revise key skills, practise exam-style tasks and understand what each component expects. You can also view our Functional Skills courses page to compare your options.
When will I receive my English Level 2 results and certificate?
Results usually come within a week, but they may take up to 20 working days depending on marking and processing times. In exceptional cases, marking can take longer, so you should book early if you need the qualification for a deadline.
After passing, certificate processing may take additional time. If you need English Level 2 for university, college, an apprenticeship, employment, promotion or professional registration, do not leave your exam until the last minute. Leave enough time for marking, certificate processing and a possible retake if needed.
What happens if I fail one English Level 2 component?
If you fail one component, you normally only need to retake the component you did not pass. For example, if you pass Reading and Speaking & Listening but fail Writing, you would usually only need to retake Writing.
This is why it is useful to understand the three components separately. Some learners are strong in Reading but need more practice with Writing, while others need more confidence with Speaking & Listening. Good preparation can reduce the chance of needing a retake.
Do I also need Functional Skills Maths Level 2?
Some learners only need English Level 2, while others need both Maths and English Level 2. This depends on your employer, university, college, apprenticeship provider or training route. Before booking, check exactly which subject or subjects you need.
If you also need Maths, you can visit our Functional Skills Maths Level 2 page or check the online Maths Level 2 exam option. If you want to revise first, the online Maths course can help you prepare before booking.
